The Heritage of Southern Iraq
Civilization began in southern Iraq. It is the land of great cities such as Ur and Babylon, where we developed writing and city living. Priceless information about mankind’s past still lies concealed beneath the landscape in ‘tells’ – earth mounds – that are the remains of ancient towns, villages and farmsteads. Since 2013 we have been excavating one of these, and have made exciting new discoveries about life in the Babylonian empire over 3,000 years ago.
Iraq has a proud tradition of valuing and researching this unique legacy, but the current image is sadly focussed on looting and destruction. Local experts have struggled to safeguard and develop their historical assets, with little opportunity for interaction with the global community. We aim to put together the best of Iraqi and international expertise, and to start a new age of exploration. We use modern techniques to unveil and interpret our shared heritage, and new media to make our discoveries accessible to all.
